The Great Debate

Can you remove Fluoride from your drinking water?

Fluoride has been added to water for many years in the form of hexafluorosilicic acid (an industrial waste product).

The rational for adding the chemical Fluoride to the water system has been claimed but never been really proven protection against dental caries.

Many countries have abandoned mass medication of their water system. For those customers who want fluoride removed Southern Cross Pottery have designed a water purifier for you that will remove fluoride from the water.

To remove this chemical there are a three ways to go about it. The best technologies are reveFluoride Filter Diagramrse osmosis and distillation, both remove fluoride very well. However, both are expensive. The third way is a simple filter with a cartridge containing activated alumina (not aluminium).

This third option is what we offer you in our Fluoride water filters. Unlike reverse osmosis and distillation our filtration system does not remove healthful minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, and does not leave the water tasting “flat”.

There are two filters in our Fluoride removal system. The first filter is a ceramic and carbon filter which removes virtually all contaminants with the exception of fluoride. Water then flows through the fluoride removal filter.

A Fluoride water filter does not improve the taste or remove other chemical contaminants, cysts and bacteria from the water. However, by adding the carbon filter an excellent broad range water filter is obtained at a very affordable price.

The Water Filter Company is proud to sell the Southern Cross Range of Ceramic Pottery fluoride water filters.

Do you buy bottled water?

Walk into a deli and buy a 600ml bottle of water and it will set you back $2.50 to $3.50.  Petrol is less expensive than that. An average price is $0.85 cents per 600ml.

And yet we Australians still spend over $500 million on plastic bottled water every year creating over 60,000 tons of greenhouse gases.

We use over 460,000 barrels of oil just to manufacture and transport these plastic bottles to contain this water.  Over 60% of these bottles end up in landfill or in our waterways and then into the sea.

Did you know that if you recycle just one plastic bottle it will save enough energy to power a television for 90 minutes.  Recycling can make a difference. Not buying plastic water bottles makes a bigger difference.

So what can you do about it? Purchase an inexpensive stainless steel drinking container and refill it everyday with fresh, clean water from your Southern Cross Pottery Filter.

And save a dolphin in the process.

Is Chlorine Safe?

Is Chlorine safe?

Have you ever smelt your tap water and realised it smells like a swimming pool?

Untreated sources of water such as streams, dams and rainwater tanks can contain harmful micro-organisms that can cause serious illness. So, to keep our tap water safe to drink governments add Chlorine to the water supply.

Chlorine, however, is a highly reactive chemical, which is one reason why it makes such a good disinfectant. Used in high enough doses Chlorine can be effective in keeping your drinking water bacteria and organism free from storage to the household tap.  But at what cost?

The chemical compounds of Chlorine are among the most economical and efficient killers of almost all living things –  fish, animals, reptiles, insects, bacteria and humans.

The problem is that Chlorine in the water supply can react with naturally occurring organic compounds to produce compounds known as disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The most common DBPs being trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs).

More than just Chlorine

However, Chlorine is not the only chemical governments add to our drinking water. They also add coagulants and flocculants, scale prevention chemicals, algicides, antioxidants and of course, fluoride.

These chemicals include sulphuric acid, hydrogen peroxide, lime, aluminium sulphate and ammonia. A wonderful concoction of chemicals all designed to give you clean drinking water…among other things.

Chronic exposure to some of these chemicals can cause liver and kidney cancer, as well as heart disease, unconsciousness or death in high doses.

Due to the potential carcinogenic nature of these compounds, drinking water regulations across the Australia require regular monitoring of these compounds in our water systems.

However, local news reports clearly indicate that regular monitoring is not so regular.

Filtering your tap water is the only sure way to be safe. Look at our range of Large and Ultra Chic filters that are designed to keep you and your family safe and healthy. Also our new SCP Fluoride Plus filters are designed to remove Fluoride and Chlorine from the water.
